Microsoft Project - Lesson 5: Fine-Tuning and Analyzing a Project, and Preparing to Track Progress
This is Lesson 5 of my Microsoft Project hands-on training course. In this lesson I show you how to review, analyze and fine-tune a project schedule prior to seeking approval to proceed. It is important to make sure that the schedule is realistic, that the dates are achievable, that the amount of work and associated costs are acceptable, and that our resources are not over-allocated. Once you, and your boss, are happy with the schedule, you can then set a baseline to support progress tracking, variance analysis and the formulation of corrective actions as the project unfolds.
Specific topics covered in the lesson include:
- Understanding which Tasks are “Critical”
- Identifying and Resolving Resource Over-allocations
- Looking for Schedule Bottlenecks
- Checking Durations and Dates for Realism
- Setting a Baseline for your Schedule
For a brief description of each of the 11 lessons that will make up the course as I create and load them, please take a look at the "Course Introduction and Outline" video. Courses covering other versions of Microsoft Project are also in the works.
