Machining LARGE Hydraulic Cylinder Rod & Eye | Lathe Machining and Thread Cutting

This video is of machining a large hydraulic cylinder rod, external thread cutting the end of the rod and reclaiming the rod eye for a Hitachi EX1100 to EX1200 mining excavator bucket cylinder conversion. First we machined the eye off the damaged EX1100 rod to be reclaimed. We bore welded the eye faces and centre hole before machining in lathe and boring eye centre hole to size. Then we turned a large 2.4 metre (8 foot) length of 170mm diameter 4140 induction hardened chrome steel into the new cylinder rod and threaded the rod end to suit the cylinder nut and piston. We are using our TM-26120G centre lathe for all the heavy duty machining.
