We are just 1 signature away from the return of extended enhanced unemployment benefits, through the recently approved by Congress $900 billion stimulus package.

The new stimulus package will offer 11 weeks of $300 unemployment benefits, and will nearly double the amount of weekly jobless aid that Americans are receiving.

Under the new bill, the average American worker will be getting $622 a week with state and Federal unemployment benefits, which is 85% of their typical salary.

With extensions to both the PUA, which is unemployment for gig workers, and PEUC, which is additional weeks of disaster relief unemployment assistance, this bill is a great starting point and will help millions of Americans with some much needed fiscal support.

The new 5,593 page stimulus package also contains some very interesting sections regarding the repayment of overpaid unemployment benefits .

The new bill states: “In the case of individuals who have received amounts of pandemic unemployment assistance to which they were not entitled, the State shall require such individuals to repay the amounts of such PUA to the State agency.”

Continuing on: “except that the State agency may waive such repayment if it determines that–the payment of such PUA was without fault on the part of any such individual; and such repayment would be contrary to equity and good conscience.”

So let me break that down: the bill requires people to pay back overpaid unemployment funds, but individual states can waive the repayment if they filed their PUA claim in good faith.

This is amazing news, as so many of y’all have said in the comments that you’ve been told to repay funds due to no fault but the state’s system, and it looks like relief could be coming soon.

Finally, a very intriguing portion of the new $900 billion stimulus package talks about the possibility of an additional $100 weekly being offered to claimants in certain states.

For states that opt in, an additional $100 weekly unemployment benefits can be provided to: “Workers who earned at least $5,000 in self-employment income in 2019.”

The bill also states that they: “will be eligible for the extra $100 per week effective Dec. 27, 2020 through March 14, 2021.”

Michele Evermore, a senior policy analyst at the National Employment Law Project, explained that it is “highly unlikely” that they will automatically provide these benefits to eligible Americans.

She stated: “Workers affected by this will definitely need to reach out to their state agencies to find out the process.”

Be sure to contact your state representatives for $100 in extended enhanced unemployment benefits.
