Slumlord Scammer?

The plaintiff says he unknowingly rented an illegal apartment from the scamming defendant, and she evicted him onto the street and treated him like a criminal. He’s suing for damages. The defendant says she rented the apartment to a woman, but instead the male plaintiff showed up and never left, claiming to be a tenant of hers but never was. She says she even had to call the police to get him to leave. The defendant claims the plaintiff has no lease with her, and therefore she does not owe him any money.
