Should You Palm Heel or Punch in a Real Fight?

Palm heel or punch? That's a common debate in the world of self-defense. Let's get into it!

ALIGNMENT. If I throw a basketball or a computer at you, you could probably slap them down without breaking your hand.

But with a punch, that gets a little trickier. Getting your shoulder and elbow into the right position so your wrist is straight and your knuckles fit the surface of the target takes more timing and coordination.
So, under pressure, when you’ve got fists and feet flying at you, palm heels are the safer choice. Point palm!

PENETRATION. Palm heels are more of a blunt force weapon, which is great for rattling the brain or smashing the nose. But knuckles can really dig into a target. Compare your palm heel to your knuckles on your own ribs! For penetration, point punch!

INJURIES. Some self-defense teachers warn that you’ll break your hand if you punch to the head. But when you throw palm heels, you run the risk of breaking your fingers!

That’s why avoiding a fight is always a safer option if possible— it doesn’t matter if you’re throwing a punch or a palm, there’s always a chance of hurting yourself. Call this one a tie.

REACH ADVANTAGE. This is a no-brainer. Stick out your arm. Open your palm, then close your fist. On my hand, the punch goes a 3 to 4 inches past my palm heel. So, point punch!

Hold it! What about a finger jab? A finger jab is longer than the punch. And what if you hit with the second knuckles? And what about a hammer fist? That’s five tools in one toolbox. Don't those count?

Yes, they do! At this point, you should see that it’s impossible to declare a winner or loser. Each weapon has advantages and disadvantages. The trick is to gain the experience to know when to use which tool for which job.

So, if you want to be a complete martial artist and have every option available to you in a self-defense situation, don’t just train the punch and don’t just train the palm heel...

TRAIN BOTH! Train everything! Because sometimes you need a saw, sometimes you need a screwdriver, and sometimes you need a hammer.
