Canada Wildfires Affect Air Quality in Northeastern U.S.
The air quality in areas from Indiana to Virginia has dropped to unhealthy levels as smoke from Canadian wildfires inundated parts of the United States. Wildfires have burned through 600 square miles of Quebec so far this year, and a storm system has pushed much of that smoke throughout the U.S., with the Northeast seeing unhealthy levels of particulate matter on June 6. The poor air quality is expected to continue through June 7 and beyond.
The climate crisis is causing wildfires to burn longer and be more destructive. As record heat sweeps across Canada, the warmer weather is drying out forests and increasing the chances of lightning strikes. Quebec isn’t the only province seeing wildfires — Alberta and Nova Scotia have also been battling blazes, with many of the fires still considered out of control.
From January to May, 6.7 million acres have burned across Canada. The 10-year average for that time period is 568,000 acres. A new study published in the journal Environmental Research Letters found that the carbon emissions from 88 of the world’s largest fossil fuel producers and cement manufacturers has been linked to 37% of the cumulative area burned in the western U.S. and southwestern Canada from 1986 to 2021.
