According to LiveScience, 4 to 5 mostly juvenile orcas managed to strip the boat’s 2 rudders of fiberglass in 10-15 minutes, leaving only the metal scaffolding. An adult orca chased the catamaran into port, while the others played with the fiberglass in the water.
Orca interactions with boats in the Strait of Gibraltar have been increasing in recent years, and they’ve sunk at least 3 of them. Scientists aren’t 100% sure why the orcas are doing this, but one theory is that orcas are being taught to attack the boats by a female orca who had a traumatic encounter with one. Other scientists think it might just be a ‘fad’ among the creatures, or that the orcas are engaging in play with disastrous consequences.
