Rare White Bison Calf Born at Wyoming State Park
Bear River State Park in Wyoming got a new addition: a rare white bison calf. The baby, which was born small at 30 lbs and is not yet named, is not albino — its mother, as well as the other white bison heifer in the park, are white due to Charolais cattle DNA. The coloring is still very rare.
'They were nearly hunted to extinction by the late 1800s. People got concerned about extinction and cattle inbreeding was used,' park officials told Cowboy State Daily.
White bison are also celebrated by some Indigenous tribes, including the Sioux, Cherokee, Navajo, Lakota, and Dakota. 'The birth is sacred within the American Indian communities, because it brings a sense of hope and is a sign that good times are about to happen,' the National Park Service said.
The new calf is believed to be the first white bison to ever be born at this specific park.
