2 baby seals bound together by net

Discarded fishing nets, also known as ghost nets, are a worldwide problem for marine life. Our Cape Fur Seals at Pelican Point are unfortunately also affected by this particular kind of ocean pollution. Activists Naude and Antoine from Ocean Conservation Namibia (OCN) came across two seal pups who were trapped in the same net. The smaller baby seal was so wrapped up in it, we weren't sure if he was even alive.
They managed to capture both seals and cut them free with our Leatherman Raptor Scissors. The net had already started to cut into their skin, but both animals will make a full recovery.
Our oceans are treated like rubbish dumpsters. We need a change in legislation to make it a punishable crime to throw rubbish into the ocean. Entanglements like this one are all due to human negligence and could be avoided.
