Unplanned Seal Rescue

Naude from Ocean Conservation was out alone at Pelican Point when he came across this seal pup with a bad entanglement. He was not actually on an entanglement patrol at all. The female seals at Cape Cross have started giving birth to healthy young pups, and for the first 3 weeks of life the pups cannot swim. For this reason OCN does very few rescues at this time of the year - in order to not disturb the colonies at this crucial time.
Naude was out counting pups and just doing a general beach survey when came across this young female. She was lying in a detached group of seals about 4 km away from the main colony, and luckily there were no newborns in this group, so he could attempt a rescue.
He snuck up on the group for about 5 minutes really slowly, and then managed to secure her in the net before she could reach the ocean.
The little pup had a very deep cut around her neck, inflicted by a thin piece of fishing line - luckily the wound seemed to be very clean with no real sign of infection. This is a great sign that she will make a swift, full recovery.
