Numbers Stations Explained – Let’s Simulate Our Own Numbers Station!

#cryptology, #cryptography, #cryptanalysis

Did you ever hear of number stations? No? Me too, but, I recently got in contact with these wile playing with a software defined radio (SDR) and I thought that these stations are a quite interesting topic for my cryptology channel here.

The number stations are radio stations that transmit numbers. It is believed that the numbers stations are mostly operated by secret services and used to contact their secret agents in foreign countries. The transmissions are most probably one-time-pad-encrypted, so we are not able to decipher any of the recorde message. The amount of number stations had its peak during the Cold War but they still exist today.

Nevertheless, the video introduces number stations, shows a general classification, and we also listen to two real number stations. Finally, we simulate our own numbers station using CrypTool 2 :-).
