Lighting for Photography - Part V - LED Lighting
Hello all and welcome back to Allan Walls Photography.
Once again, I’m sorry for the delay in getting this video released - While I do now have intermittent power, there is still no internet. It has been almost two weeks and it is driving me nuts! For anyone that is interested, I am finishing up a short video that documents the extent of the damage that Sally caused. I am uploading this video sitting in the parking lot of a hotel that has internet. The things I do for you!
Thank you, as always, to my Patreon supporters and to those kind folks who have made donations through my donation page (https://www.allanwallsphotography.com/donations). None of this would be possible without your generosity!
If you would like to support my efforts and help keep the videos coming, please consider signing up as a Patreon patron, which can be done by going to https://patreon.com/allanwallsphotography. I could certainly use your help!
We have made it to part 5 of the Lighting for Photography Series - this episode is my take on LED as a photographic light source (I remain unimpressed). This is also a long video - I would have done this in two bites, but it is so frustrating to go hunting for a place to upload them, I decided to it just once.
In this one, I explain how LED light works and why its limitations result in lighting solutions that are either obscenely expensive or total rubbish (oversimplification… there is a ton of nuance to consider. I cover the development of LED lighting, from its early days of IR only, to its most current manifestations. I walk you through the various uses of LED light in photography and then discuss why none of them seem to add much to what we already have. I get into the problems of modifying LEDs and then go off on a semi-rant about the pricing of these devices. I also give my opinion on LED as a macro-lighting option.
Without access to the internet, I have not been able to provide links to the equipment I talk about in this video. As soon as that changes, I will write a companion post over on www.allanwallsphotography.com/blog - all the links will be found there.
This is the final video on continuous lighting, so next up is flash (which may have to be more that one video).
Two exciting projects are in the works, but neither will be finished until I am reconnected… One is a deep dive into Color Science and the other, a special “Album Cover” project.
Best wishes to each and every one of you. Until next time…
Allan
