International Day of People with Disability - Bark Outs!

This Friday on December 3 is International Day of People with Disability (#IDPwD), a day to challenge the way we think about disability, celebrate achievements and work to create a more inclusive Australia. To celebrate, we wanted to recognise and give a special 'bark-out' to our friends in the media and entertainment industry who are doing really good things to make their content accessible to those with a disability.

Our first bark-out goes to...

⭐ @PedestrianTV,
⭐ @Urban List, and
⭐ @Time Out.
These outlets do an excellent job of including image descriptions on their social media posts, which is important so that people with low vision or blindness know exactly what's in each photo.

Our next bark-out goes to....

⭐@Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) for the creation of the Disability Affairs Reporter role currently held by Nas Campanella.
Thank you for creating this role to help represent the voices, and to tell the stories of those living with disability.

Our next bark-out goes to...

⭐ @Netflix,
⭐ @Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) TV, and
⭐ @Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) TV for including audio description (AD) in their original content and in certain programs.
Audio Description helps people with low vision and blindness better enjoy their content and understand exactly what's happening in every scene through narration.

Last (but certainly not least) our final bark-out goes to...

⭐ The incredible Auslan interpreters who showed up day in and day out to the very important press conferences throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
Thanks to you, many Australians who are deaf or hard of hearing were able to access vital information during this time.

Congratulations to all of our bark-out nominees! Now, we want to hear from you! Is there an organisation or someone that you think deserves a bark-out for making their content more accessible to those living with a disability? Tag them in the comments below so that we can recognise their good work.
