How To Establish a Trust Baseline with the Trust Matrix
After working on over 1000 projects over forty years, I realized that one of the biggest mistakes made at the beginning of a project is assuming that a clean slate can be achieved by setting the right tone.
I've learned that everyone comes to a project with a different baseline of trust. This can be attributed to the psychological concept of anchoring, where a person's set point is raised or lowered based on their previous positive or negative experiences.
To address this issue, I created the Trust Matrix exercise to help establish a baseline of trust at the start of a project. The Trust Matrix is a tool that allows team members to explicitly identify their goals, what they want to achieve, and potential roadblocks they want to avoid. By using the Trust Matrix, teams can communicate openly and honestly and set clear expectations for the project.
My experience working on numerous projects has taught me the importance of establishing a baseline of trust. I believe this tool can help teams avoid common pitfalls that can arise from assuming that we are starting with common expectations and similar experiences.
To increase your project's chances of success, take the time to gather your team's collective experiences, assumptions, concerns, fears, and aspirations at the project's beginning. By doing so, you can prevent the most common problem that derails projects from the outset.
Don't hesitate to pause and encourage open communication within your team to avoid potential setbacks and ensure a smoother project journey.
