Nose Breathing

I added nose and diaphragm breathing as a habit about a year ago. I didn't realize that breathing through my mouth was actually depriving my body of the necessary oxygen to function well.

While playing tennis, I used to take gulps of air after a hard point, thinking I was helping me recover for the next point. It was actually doing the opposite.

Mouth breathing adds more stress and drains energy. Who knew?

Nose breathing warms and purifies the air before it enters the lungs.

The magic of nose breathing is its link to nitric oxide (NO). NO increases the body's demand to absorb more oxygen that entered the lungs by 20%. In other words, your body and brain have to work 20% harder every day if you breathe through your mouth.

If you have ever used pure oxygen as an athlete or for medical reasons, you know first hand the boost that little bit offers.

Try it. I started doing it during meditation. I then started to practice it while driving, walking, or waiting. I was finally able to shift to nose breathing during tennis, even during hard exertion. It takes some getting used to if this is not natural for you. Over time you'll do it naturally and feel the difference. Remember try, learn and look for progress, not perfection.

If you struggle with stress, sleep, depression, and even ADHD, nose breathing and mindful breathing may help.

There are several methods for nose breathing. If you practice #yoga, you're familiar with many. I'm not an expert by any means. I've used #boxbreathing in the past but currently practicing Buteyko breathing.

Here is a link to a guide on #butyeko breathing.
