Black Swans in Dawlish - Devon #devon #dawlish #swans #southwestcoastpath #tourist #train
Welcome to my latest day trip adventure. This week we let the train take the strain as we venture from the Devon town of Dawlish to the seaside town of Exmouth. On the way we stop at Starcross, home of the Atmospheric Railway, past Powderham Castle to Exeter. We then visit the once historic port of Topsham before ending our journey at Exmouth. This is a journey a year in the making, as you'll find out during the programme. I'm joined by my friend Tony.
Dawlish is a traditional seaside town, with a wonderful golden sand beach on its doorstep. The town offers a range of amusements and is centred around The Lawn and Brook, which is home to the famous black swans. It's also renowned for it's railway track where, in years gone by, would famously be victim of the weather during winter storms. Just a few miles down the road is Dawlish Warren, a beautiful nature reserve with a blue flag beach.
Across the Exe Estuary from Exmouth, Starcross is a small waterside village with plenty of railway interest. The village is a popular centre for sailing and is also a good location for bird watching on the Exe Estuary. The remains of one of Brunel's atmospheric railway pumping stations is here, and the modern railway, following Brunel's route, sweeps along the estuary a few feet from the water. A trainspotter's paradise, especially if heritage trains are running.
The Imperial is located in Exeter and is part of the Wetherspoon chain. Previously the Imperial Hotel between 1923 and 1994, it was converted into the pub that locals and visitors know today. The Imperial’s orangery, with its large windows that look out into the garden, wasn’t an original feature of the hotel. It was added by Dr William Buller Henderson who purchased the property in 1897. The decorations in The Imperial’s ballroom were brought from Holden House which was built for Devonshire politician Sir George Chudleigh in 1725 and 1740. In the 1920s, the building, then known as Elmfield House, was purchased by the Pollard family. At the same time, the owner of Haldon House was gambling away his fortune and reached a point where he would sell off parts of his house in exchange for cash.
Topsham’s roots date back to the Roman era as a bustling port. Over the centuries, it evolved into a thriving maritime hub, trading goods with Europe and the Americas. Its maritime heritage is still evident today in its architecture and waterfront views.
Finally, Exmouth, a coastal gem nestled at the mouth of the River Exe. Known for its expansive sandy beaches, historic charm, and vibrant community, Exmouth is an ideal destination for those seeking both relaxation and adventure. Whether you’re planning a weekend escape or a longer holiday, Exmouth offers a unique blend of natural beauty, outdoor activities, and cultural experiences that make it a must-visit location on the South Devon coast of England. Exmouth is home to over two miles of golden sandy beaches, the beach stretches from the Exe Estuary to Orcombe Point, offering ample space for sunbathing, swimming, and beachcombing. Families will love the shallow waters and safe bathing areas patrolled by RNLI lifeguards in the peak season, while adventure seekers can enjoy a range of water sports, including kite surfing, paddleboarding, and sailing. Exmouth marks the western gateway to the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site that spans 95 miles of stunning coastline. This ancient landscape is a treasure trove of geological wonders, with cliffs that reveal 185 million years of Earth's history. A visit to Orcombe Point, where the Jurassic Coast begins, is a must for geology enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. The Geoneedle at Orcombe Point stands as a striking monument, marking the official start of the Jurassic Coast. From here, you can embark on a Stuart Line Jurassic Coast Cruise, taking in breathtaking views and discovering hidden coves and rock formations. You can also take a scenic walk along the South West Coast Path .
