This week, Day Tripper Daz returns to the historic ocean city of Plymouth in Devon, England. And it's thirsty work as my friend Tony and I go in search of some of Plymouth's best pubs. And as well as trying out some great booze, we take the time to discover some of the city's best and historic locations.
We begin our pub tour on Plymouth's notorious Union Street, in the Union Rooms. It's here we also see the old Odeon Cinema and the sadly declining building of the Palace Theatre and discover it's somewhat tragic history. The 'Bank' Pub in the city is also the location of stars embedded in the pavement in true Hollywood style.
Plymouth Hoe is the scene of the statue of Sir Francis Drake, the War Memorial as well as the iconic lighthouse called Smeaton's Tower. And close by is our next pub 'The Gypsy Moth'. This was the name of the boat sailed by Francis Chichester who was the first person to sail around the world single handed.
Next it's off the the Barbican area, home to the famous Mayflower Steps where the Pilgrim's set sail for the United States of America on what would be a voyage to set up the USA in their way. We explore a number of pubs around this area and take in some of the historical locations around the harbour. The Plymouth Barbican is a historic area located on the western and northern sides of Sutton Harbour, Plymouth, England. It is known for its narrow cobbled streets, 100 listed buildings, and its role as a significant departure point for the Pilgrim Fathers aboard the Mayflower in 1620. The area features the Plymouth Gin Distillery, the oldest working gin distillery in England, and offers a vibrant cultural scene with galleries, cafes, and shops. The Barbican has a rich maritime heritage, having survived much of the destruction from World War II and the Public Health Act era, making it a unique blend of history and modernity.
We end this day trip in The Navy Inn. As the name suggests, a sea farers pub with more than just a nautical past - there's tales of ghostly hauntings here.
So there's plenty of spirits going on in this adventure and not just the liquid type.
