In this lecture I will be covering the nature of meditation. First we focus on meditation itself as a spiritual practice developed by many different traditions, and simply described as a tool of silence and self observation. When one starts to observe oneself consciously in silence, one starts to hold thoughts, words and images as objects of consciousness, and these thoughts, words and images are the nature of the self as an abstraction. The more this self is observed the more there is a distance between it and you as an observer or a pure consciousness. In other words, the notion of the self dissolves as an illusion upon close inspection and what emerges is just an observer with no content or form. For many meditation experts what this leads to is a transformation of a conflictual and tension riddled self consciousness into a self-less consciousness in peace and stillness. This transition is often described as a transition from the head of reason to the heart of intuition. One does not permanently eliminate the head of reason for the heart of intuition, but rather has the ability to operate with both of these forms of consciousness. After a long cultivation of meditation as a practice one generally gains a transformed perspective on both the nature of the self and the nature of the world. One also gains a more objective perspective on one self, and also, perhaps most importantly, a healthier space to make decisions and take actions in the world.
