BUFFY-WHATS MY LINE-BECOMING-fight scene home movies from stunt coordinator Jeff Pruitt
From DARK AGES / WHAT'S MY LINE / BECOMING / PHASES:
The characters all evolved in season 2. When I did my first fight with Angel he had to be saved by Buffy. I was told he needed her protection as he wasn't as tough or skilled. Since Buffy and Angel were going to be fighting side by side I asked if I could make them equals.
In DARK AGES I planned a more elaborate kicking and punching combo for Angel, but I was told to only do one kick and one punch and we would see how it goes. So here we see Angel do his very first fancy kick to the head (stuntman Clay Barber in a wig.)
Francine Morris steps in as Kendra for the first Slayer vs Slayer confrontation.
Since the set was still being built for the very first Buffy vs Angel fight, I took Sophia outside to teach her the fight.
The original concept for the sword fight was for Buffy to be completely inept with a sword and spend the fight running from Angel. Once again I wanted to make them a little more equal and Joss agreed. Only he stipulated that he didn't want it to look like fencing or typical dance-like stage combat. No Zorro stuff here. He wanted the characters to behave as if they were desperately trying to hack each other up. And he wanted Buffy to perform a "Samurai Sword Catch" near the end.
Since we were shooting at Universal Studios that week I brought Sophia to Angel's mansion on a Sunday to teach her the fight. Sundays were great for me to sit on a set and make up the action as it was quiet there were no interruptions or frantic activity then.
The rumor that Sophia Crawford broke her index finger in the scene prior to this one is true. But since it was the last fight of the season she elected to tape it up with flesh-colored tape and hold the sword with three fingers and her thumb. Brad Martin stepped in at the last moment to double Angel. I wanted to use the Angel wig on him, but was overruled. Later on we wished we had wigged him. He did a great job though and it turned out to be a fan favorite.
And a little bit from PHASES as Seth explains how he became a werewolf and Sophia steps onto a SFX device and goes for a ride.
