[4K] Tai Kwun walk, Hong Kong (大館)

March 2021
Tai Kwun is one of the most spectacular spaces in Central. Thanks to careful renovation, this former jail, court and prison is now a tastefully done museum to the past and a home to arts for contemporary Hong Kong.
Tai Kwun (大館) started off as a miserable place for most that visited. It was referred to as a "one-stop shop for justice," which meant if you were grabbed by police outside, you could be booked (the jail), tried (the court) and even imprisoned to serve your sentence, right in this one complex.
The story of Tai Kwun tells the story of Hong Kong's very early colonial era, and onwards. Ho Chi Minh spent time in the prison here, as did many Vietnamese refugees later.
The current version and the information on display within it doesn't romanticize the buildings' past -- but instead takes a frank look at the history that happened here, and makes room for great things to come.
