Right from birth the baby elephant doesn't really know what to do with its trunk. He throws it around while shaking his head or rotating it like a helicopter and even inadvertently can step on it when he is kneeling. However, in an innate way for suckling, he knows, how to lift it up to reach the nipple of one of his mother's two breasts.
Later on this calf will be able to use its trunk to drink water from the streams and then, imitating its mom and the other members of the herd, he will learn to use it to grab food, tear off leaves, bindweed and twist these vegetables to cut them and shake dust and sand off, before eating them.

Dès la naissance le bébé éléphant ne sait pas vraiment quoi faire avec sa trompe. Il la balance dans tous les sens et même par inadvertance peut la piétiner lors qu’il est agenouillé. Cependant, d’une manière innée, il sait la relever pour pouvoir atteindre le téton d’un des deux seins de sa mère.
Plus tard il sera capable de se servir de sa trompe pour boire de l’eau des ruisseaux et ensuite en imitant sa maman et les autres membres du troupeau, il apprendra à s’en servir pour ramasser de la nourriture, arracher des feuilles, du liseron en les tordant pour les couper puis les secouer pour les débarrasser de la poussière et du sable avant de les manger
