How To Use Chords In Your Solos

Using chords in your solos is a great way to add power and variety to your improvisations and I've been getting a lot of questions about how I use them in my style of playing.

Here's the basic concept:

1. Play some solo lines
2. Back them up with a chord
3. Play some solo lines
4. back them up with a chord

Before you do this you need to know some crispy chords mainly on the top four strings of the guitar.

You need to know voicings for all the chord types you would get in a tune that you play which are basically Major chords, Minor chords and Dominant 7th chords (these also include diminished).

As your playing progresses you will add more voicings to your repertoire of chords. Start off with some basics and take it from there.

It's a big part of my playing and a really cool technique to add to your playing. What's really important is to make the chords swing!

Imagine a big band backing up a soloist. You want to enhance the solo with the chords and not distract from the overal vibe of your solo.

Have fun!
Robin
