The Cabot Trail - RVing Cape Breton Highlands National Park
We LOVED it here, the world famous CABOT TRAILl! Located on the northern portion of Cape Breton Island, and through Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Highlands National Park, this drive STUNNING. Enjoy the RV Vlog!
It's time everyone! We get to drive the world famous Cabot Trail with the RV! It was so picturesquely beautiful to explore and see it first hand. We woke up less than 30 minutes from the entrance to Cape Breton Highlands National Park to make starting the day easy. And it was a boondocking site at a light house on the ocean front, so that's not bad either haha. We knew we wanted to go to the Skyline Hike in the Highlands and were worried how parking could be at the trail head after our luck RV parking at a Bay of Fundy National Park trail head.
Luckily the Cabot Trail / Cape Breton Island had us covered and had 2 large RV parking spots at it, and one of them wasn't even busy enough to need use yet when we arrived! Farther down the road from the RV parking we found the car parking which we enjoyed being so separate from the RVs, and the start of our trail. The Highlands Skyline Hike took us out on a round rocky cliff top overlooking open Atlantic waters and the stunning hills of the Highlands. A long the walk after the main viewpoint we took a the longer loop back to the parking lot. It had a few good vantage points of the ocean but still made for a great walk through the forests. We even got lucky enough to see two female moose feeding! Apparently some others that had been watching them for awhile had even see the bull moose earlier!
That Cape Breton National Park hike was a 10/10 way to see some of the famous national park views and then it was back on the road from there. All along the Cabot trail there are big pull over spots with views over the large cliffs down at the Atlantic. I can't even quite explain how extreme the views felt there in person, so cool. We then end up getting to a small little town in the middle of the Cabot Trail called Neil's Harbor, where we camped the night as well. This cute little town is in the middle of the drive through the national park, however is not designated national park land which makes boondocking legal and allow d in it. We had another amazing lighthouse and view of the fishing boats for the night, lucky us. This town is one of my favorite little small town boondocking spot memories now too. Amazing.
Waking up at the lighthouse we had planned on eating at the Chowder Hut that was there, but they were opening late that day the sign on the door said so sadly we had to hit the road. Luckily any day in RV life when your driving the Cabot trail is a good day. We found a small little viewpoint hike on the way out of Cabot trail and said prepared to say our goodbyes to the Highlands. This Canadian National Park was so different than our experience in Banff setting up at an RV campsite and having public transit into a busy city. This was all about the beautiful drive and enjoying the ability to make home wherever in nature with the motorhome. Which is what we ended up doing leaving the park for our next Boondocking site.
Our last boondocking campsite outside of Cape Breton National Park was the site of an old, abandoned camp ground. You could see the old site display numbers peeking through the grass on some sites, other sites that used to have hook ups still had rusty metal service boxes. The old buildings had been trashed and had some spray painting adding to the spooky vibe, as well as an old motorhome jacked up in one of the sites, but with no one there. It was on the ocean so we went out and tried a little sunset fishing, and ended up having someone else show up! We ended up meeting a real cool guy who had a wicked 4x4 class B dream ride. We spent the evening talking until like midnight before calling that a wrap for this vlog and leg of the adventure.
Super fun times and experiences in Cape Breton National Park. Hope you guys liked it!
Catch you in the next video guys as we check out a crazy historical fort we hadn't even heard of, the site of Canada's first lighthouse AND the ferry to NEWFOUNDLAND!
Cheers friends!
