The Clearcuts Abutting the Cape Breton Highlands National Park
The isle of Cape Breton is one of the world's most beautiful tourist destinations, especially its rugged Cape Breton Highlands National Park. But if you get just off the tourist routes, you will not find a land of pristine natural beauty, but one in the midst of being raped as its native Acadian forests are clearcut to oblivion. And while Cape Breton has blocked the use of glyphosate as a means for creating tree farms for some time, the mechanical conversion of native, healthy woodlands into conifer plantations carries on full steam. Less than 1% of the old Acadian forest remains, and as the government continues to ally itself with forestry cartels, time is running out to save a unique ecosystem that is invaluable as a carbon sink, erosion blocker and air and water purifier. As well, this unique ecosystem is crucial for various migrating species and home to many endangered plants and animals. Once again, we're going to use actual satellite imagery depicted in the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, this time to take an amazingly realistic tour of the hidden side of Cape Breton Island, the one the provincial government doesn't want you to ever see.
Viewers should note: In the final scene where I highlight in the satellite image the areas that have been clearcut, there is actually much more that's been clearcut. But the older clearcuts are harder to tell from satellite, so I wanted to mark only those areas that can be clearly distinguished so that no one can ever say this expose is exaggerated.
The mission of "The Naturalist" program is to provide information about natural science and inspire persons to care about it. Many more lessons on natural science and back-to-basics living are to come.
