Light-weighting: optimizing part design via reliable lifetime prediction of thermoplastic components

The application of short glass fibre reinforced plastics (SFRP) in automotive applications is promoted if engineers have available simulation tools for the accurate prediction of fatigue lifetime. During this presentation a framework will be presented that combines experimental and numerical methods to develop such engineering tools, taking into account the relevant failure mechanisms, effects of anisotropy, mean stress sensitivity, and compensation for local stress concentrations. Step-by-step the key features and assumptions of the framework are explained, and the consistency and accuracy that can be achieved are demonstrated. Subsequently, the framework is validated on a representative demonstration part that was injection moulded and tested extensively in fatigue loading.
