Musk's SpaceX is about to ditch Falcon Heavy and Dragon after Starship...
Never standing still, SpaceX continually elevates its position over time.
Recently, SpaceX confirmed the demise of its Falcon Heavy rockets and Dragon spacecraft following the groundbreaking flights of Starship.
Why is this happening?
Let’s find out on today’s episode of Alpha Tech:
With the recent Starship launches over the past few months, it’s evident that SpaceX is making significant progress in preparing the Starship vehicle for critical milestones in the future. What are these milestones? They include the flawless performance of Starship during launches, ascending perfectly without any issues, the seamless coordination of launch-supporting infrastructure, and most notably, the ambitious goal of catching a Super Heavy booster mid-air. This promises a rapid and cost-effective reuse cycle for SpaceX’s Starship program.

Speaking at the Baron Investment Conference in New York, SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell shared her vision for the future of Starship flights and the eventual fate of the company’s existing rockets.
“Starship obsoletes Falcon 9 and the Dragon capsule,” Shotwell said. “Now, we are not shutting down Dragon, and we are not shutting down Falcon. We’ll be flying that for six to eight more years, but ultimately, people are going to want to fly on Starship.”

Indeed, as a “Super heavy-lift launch vehicle”, Starship’s payload capacity is extraordinary. It has the potential to take over missions currently handled by Falcon Heavy and Falcon 9. Furthermore, as a fully reusable spacecraft, Starship could replace all existing crewed spacecraft, such as Soyuz and Dragon, which carry fewer astronauts into space.
To solidify the belief that Starship will dominate the launch market, Shotwell confidently declared:
“We just passed 400 launches on Falcon, and I would not be surprised if we fly 400 Starship launches in the next four years.”
