Jumping for Joy: Choice and Excitement in Freejumping
Can horses love and choose jumping? Yes! Recall Freejumping is so much fun for both of you and is a brilliant way to build your horse’s confidence, capabilities and joy in jumping.
1. STAY‘Stay’ is one of our foundation behaviours and it starts to teach impulse control to your horse. This is literally them learning to control their impulses to earn a reward - so, they will naturally want to come with you and the rewards, but they learn to stay and to wait to get the reward instead. It helps horses because they learn not to bolt, rear, grab the food etc and instead to think through the situation without getting frustrated or anxious. Horses with good impulse control are fantastic learners and problem solvers!
2. RECALLOnce your horse will stand quietly while you walk a short distance from them, you can begin to add in a cue to call them to you. I hold the target up and call their name. At first, this will only be a step or two and then you build up the distance.Once you’ve got a bigger distance, you can increase the pace - running backwards as you recall often encourages your horse to trot to you, and you can use any voice cues you have for trot and canter, too.
3. OBSTACLEStart with two jump wings/standards that you recall your horse through, or a pole to recall your horse over. Mark and reward as they go through or over them, so they know that’s part of the exercise. Once they understand it, you can start to build it into a little jump.
4. Throughout, you balance the ENERGYThis is an exercise where you ask your horse to lift their energy to run to you and over the obstacle, and then to immediately slow and calm down when they reach you and walk with you. Some horses will need more time, focus and rewards spent on the SLOOOOW times to help them stay calm and steady. Others will need more rewards when they put in a bit more energy to help build their enthusiasm. If you want to learn it, we (of course!) have videos on all the steps in the CT Club, our online membership site where you get videos, community and support for reward-based training.
