Teaching the Pirouette - First Steps. Reward-based Training

Teaching any movement to your horse is fairly straightforward when you've taught all the elements needed to create it - things like weight shifts, flexions, moving the shoulders and quarters independently and so on. By breaking it down and teaching each movement separately, you can then combine them any way you like.

Of course, using a marker and reward just makes this process even easier! You can see in this video that my WB mare, India, truly understands each cue and is happy to respond to it lightly and promptly. She's also a pro at working out new puzzles and really listening out for the click to tell her exactly what she's doing right, so she can do it again! She's engaged with the process because she's enjoying it, which makes it fun for both of us - just how riding should be! In fact, the horseflies were our biggest challenge here... :-)

In this video, you'll see all the pieces which comprise it and India's first ever attempt at a couple of steps of pirouette.
