I Walked Through the Door of No Return. My Family Name Is Why.

I'm a Black American. My ancestors came through a door like this one. I just walked through it for the first time.

I'm Andre with PhinnTravels, and this is Episode 3 of my Ghana series, where I brought my parents to Africa for the first time.

Today we visited Elmina Castle and Cape Coast Castle, two of the most significant sites of the transatlantic slave trade on Ghana's coast.

The last slave ship to arrive in the United States docked in Alabama in 1860. That was 166 years ago. This is not ancient history.

The guide explained that African names carried everything, your history, your clan, your tribe, your royalty. Walking through the Door of No Return meant losing that name forever.

And then there is the Door of Return. Ghana's invitation to the diaspora to come home.

This is why we travel. Not just to see the world, but to understand ourselves inside of it.
