Why Is Australia Taking Kids Off Social Media?

Australia’s social media ban for youths took effect, mandating services to keep under-16s off their platforms or face fines of up to A$49.5 million.

The law affects services such as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, and Reddit, which have said they will comply despite voicing opposition to the rules.

Policymakers in other nations, including Indonesia, Denmark, and Brazil, are planning moves to shield young users, with some announcing plans such as requiring parental approval for those under 18.
