Have you ever designed or worked with a 100V audio line system?
This is a real Class D amplifier project designed for a public address system.
The output power is only 30 W, but the output voltage is 100 V — and that is not a mistake.
In PA systems, loudspeakers typically have high impedance (around 400 ohms) and are connected using long cable runs across large facilities. High voltage allows efficient power transmission with minimal losses over distance.
Class D amplifiers operate using PWM. The power transistors switch fully ON or OFF, avoiding linear losses and achieving efficiency above 90%. An LC output filter reconstructs the analog signal from the PWM waveform and feeds the horn speaker.
This is not about audiophile preferences.
Class D and 100 V are engineering solutions for offices, factories, and transport infrastructure.
