Reserve Fuel Explained By An Airline Captain - [Know When to Start Your Divertion].

Today we are going to talk about the RESERVE FUEL.

By the end of the video, you will understand what the RESERVE FUEL is and why it is so important during Commercial Air Operations.

The Reserve fuel is the sum of the Alternate Fuel Plus the Final Reserve Fuel.

The Alternate fuel includes the fuel from your DA/H or MDA/H, the missed approach procedure, the climb, cruise, descent, and land into your Alternate aerodrome.

The Final Reserve fuel is the Fuel required to hold for 30 minutes over your alternate (or destination if the alternate is not required) at 1500 feet.

On a normal day, you simply fly from your departure to your destination Airport, however, when you cannot land at your destination is when the Reserve Fuel plays its role.

The reasons why you should divert and use the reserve can be multiple such as bad weather, runway closure, and so on.

What I can suggest to you is not to wait until the reserve fuel before starting a diversion.
