In this video, we are going to talk about the Indicated Airspeed and True Airspeed.

The goal is to understand what is the difference between these two speeds and what happens to your Indicated Airspeed if you climb at constant True Airspeed.

The True Airspeed is the speed of your aircraft relative to the Airflow and the Indicated Airspeed is the speed that you read from the Airspeed indicator.

The difference between these two speeds is the Air density, at low altitude the True Airspeed and the Indicated Airspeed are very similar, however, at high altitudes, they are different since the density is lower.

The Airspeed indicator uses the Pitot Tube and the static port to calculate the Dynamic Pressure and provide you with the Indicated Airspeed.

So, if the density decreases the indicated airspeed will start to decrease at constant True Airspeed.

It is important to understand and talk about the Dynamic Pressure formula which is equal to 0.5*Air Density*Square of the Speed.

This formula will provide you with the information necessary to get the Indicated Airspeed.

If you maintain the Speed (True Airspeed) constant during the climb, your air density will decrease thus the Indicated Airspeed will start to go down.

Try to play with the formula to understand what would happen to your Indicated Airspeed with the climb and the descend as the Air density changes.
