Fish Hook Float & Line Freed From Catfish - Gear Remains in Nest - Feb 14, 2021 - NCTC Bald Eagles

Smitty while eating and pulling on the fish head frees the fish hook, float and fishing line. The hazardous material falls into the nest. Luckily Smitty did not ingest the hook or float it remains in the nest near 9 o'clock. The footage is captured in actual time and in slow motion. NCTC is aware and they continue to monitor the situation. Hoping the gear falls into one of the holes along the crib rails where it would be buried deep in the nest, thereby eliminating the hazard.

The resident bald eagles are named Bella (female) and Smitty (male). Bella and Smitty has been together since the fall of 2018. Bella replaced the long-term resident female Belle in 2018; Belle was injured in a territorial dispute with other adult eagles. The resident male Smitty has been at this nest since 2011 when he replaced the long-term resident male Liberty.
The NCTC Bald Eagle nest is located 75 miles from Washington, D.C. on the campus of The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services' National Conservation Training Center (NCTC). The campus is located at Shepherdstown, West Virginia. The nest and territory is prime real estate located about 1/4 mile from the Potomac River; rich in resources for an active bald eagle family and at times visitors/intruders challenge Bella and Smitty for their territory.
