Dangerous Storms - Talon & Spirit Hunker Down Together at Nest - June 21, 2021 - NCTC Eagles

Dad delivers a fish just before the arrival of a dangerous weather system that brings heavy rain, high winds, thunder and lightening to the area. Talon and Spirit hunker down together in the nest. Bella or Smitty was seen flying towards the nest during the storm so one or both of them were in the tree with the kids. After the storm both juveniles were seen at the nest a few times before dark. Prayers to all that are in the path of severe weather tonight, stay safe.

About the NCTC Bald Eagles
The resident bald eagles are named Bella (female) and Smitty (male). Bella and Smitty has been together since the fall of 2018. Together they have successfully raised and fledged 4 eaglets. Bella replaced the long-term resident female Belle in 2018; Belle was injured in a territorial dispute with other adult eagles. The resident male Smitty has been at this nest since 2011 when he replaced the long-term resident male Liberty.

The NCTC Bald Eagle nest is located 75 miles from Washington, D.C. on the campus of The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services' National Conservation Training Center (NCTC). The campus is located at Shepherdstown, West Virginia. The nest and territory is prime real estate located about 1/4 mile from the Potomac River; rich in resources for an active bald eagle family and at times visitors/intruders challenge Bella and Smitty for their territory.
