Filmy Dome Spider Web #neriene #domespider

(note, contest ends tonight at 11:59 PM Pacific Time. See prior "antlion" video to participate!)

Of all the spider web structures I've ever seen, this is probably the one that impresses me the most. They are common here in the Pacific NW. There are a couple species in the genus Neriene in my area including the Sierra Dome Spider (N. litigiosa) and the Filmy Dome Spider (N. radiata). Neriene digna are even more common here but if my observations are correct their webs are tiny sheet-webs that are only slightly concave but nothing like the larger dome webs you see in this video. This genus of spiders is in the family Linyphiidae, the sheetweb spiders.

The intricacy of their web is mind-blowing, as is the beauty you see in colors in the last segment of this video. They are not a spider you will ever see building a web indoors. In late summer and fall they are reaching maturity and a male or two can often be found in or near each female's dome. They seem to feed primarily on fungus gnats and small crane flies, though when the dampwood termites emerge in mass for a month or so each September it's buffet time for many local organisms, like these beautiful spiders.
