It is 50 years today, since Bowie’s 5th of September 1974 concert at the Universal Amphitheatre. Here is an excerpt of his performance of “Time”, from that that show, sourced from a newly restored version of Alan Yentob’s 1975 BBC film, Cracked Actor.

David bowie’s 1974 Diamond Dogs tour commenced in June 1974. It utilized a rock opera-style stage show format with multiple sets, costume changes, and choreography. The set for the tour, “Hunger City” was designed by Mark Ravitz. It included a variety of props, such as streetlamps, chairs and catwalks. For the song "Big Brother", Bowie sang while atop a multi-mirrored glass "asylum", emerging from inside it for the next song, "Time", sitting in the palm of a giant hand covered in light bulbs.

The material in this video hails from the second leg of the Diamond Dogs tour, which started with 7 dates at the Universal Amphitheatre, in Los Angeles 2 – 8 of September. BBC filmmaker Alan Yentob and his team were there to document the September shows and Bowie’s precarious state of mind. Yentob fashioned the resulting material into one of the most widely celebrated music documentaries of all time, Cracked Actor, which was first shown on BBC1 on the 26th of January 1975. In 2013, Alan Yentob said of the film: "I'd caught him at what was an intensely creative time, but it was also physically and emotionally gruelling. Our encounters tended to take place in hotel rooms in the early hours of the morning or in snatched conversations in the back of limousines”. Alan Yentob went on to hold senior roles at the BBC including head of music and arts, controller of BBC1 and controller of BBC2. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2024 Birthday Honours for services to the arts and media.

At the David Bowie World Fan Convention in July this year, I co-hosted, “Hollywood High - Alan Yentob's Cracked Actor” – a two-hour deep dive into the documentary with Alan Yentob himself. My fellow host was noted artist, author and fellow 70's Bowie fanatic Mark Wardel. Mark and I interviewed Alan extensively about his film, alternating the talk with clips from my newly restored HD version of the film. My experience of the panel was quite dominated by concerns with some of the technical challenges. That evening, I was invited to join Alan Yentob and the team for dinner, but unfortunately, I still had a lot of material to prepare for the weekend, so I went back to my room to work. The next day, Alan Horne described that dinner as one of the best experiences of his life. Ho hum.

I have been asked many times about my Cracked Actor restoration project. The source is not the BBC Cracked Actor broadcasts, which since 2013 have been from a version that has the frame ratio cut down into pseudo-widescreen. I have worked from an alternate pre-broadcast master source, that retains the original 4:3 ratio that Cracked Actor was made in.

Basically, I have restored the film, scene by scene, and edited in an all-new music soundtrack, using the latest remastered version of every song featured in the film. Here is a slightly re-edited clip from my restoration of Cracked Actor.
