1978... the most glamorous year ever!

This is the bold claim made by filmmaker Marcel Grant in this new film which, through archive footage along with contemporary interviews with some of the surviving characters, documents the star studded decadence of a scene in which the chic and famous of the world’s major cities partied like there was no tomorrow.

From the decadence of the Romans to the ‘Bright Young Things’ of the 1920’s, high society has traditionally indulged, played, spent money excessively and participated in every form of sexual fantasy imaginable. However, Grant concludes that against a contrasting background of economic gloom, the year 1978 presents the apex of a hedonism which though still fabulously glamorous, was far more democratic... providing you were young, beautiful, rich or stylish enough to allow the velvet rope to slide aside, granting you entry to nirvana.

Marcel Grant was 17 in 1978 and crashing in one of Soho sex-king Paul Raymond’s London penthouse apartments, along with a louche collection of nightlife denizens, strippers, models and high society types slumming it on the London scene. An aspiring actor with some high fashion modelling for David Bailey and Antony Price under his belt, Grant was in a prime position to witness and indulge in the pleasures of the hedonistic social whirl of London to New York... Paris to Palm Beach. Conveyed by limousine from one hot spot to the next, he recalls sharing cocaine laced birthday cake with Liz Taylor, dancing on the bar at the legendary Studio 54, seeing Grace Jones in one of her early performances in Orlando and then being whipped on stage by her in London, having a song written about him by Freddie Mercury and meeting Princess Grace of Monaco... these were just a few of the now seemingly impossible experiences this straight teenager experienced while navigating the heavily gay influenced scene of the time. A time when super-stars, fashion models, artists, movie stars gay or straight, would rub shoulders with wider society before Aids hit, and the murder of John Lennon forced the famous to retreat behind their walls of high security... and so the ‘VIP area’ was created.

Marcel Grant’s film will be a visual feast which documents this super-stylish milieu, before globalization flattened the playing field and ended the era of true style and glamour proving that 1978 was indeed... ‘Glamour’s Golden Sunset’.
