Wilco | Kamera | 2002

Wilco released their fourth album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, twenty years ago, in April 2002. This video is a new edit of studio footage of the Yankee… recording sessions circa 2000 / 2001, cut to a track from the album, Kamera.

The footage originates from the 2002 Sam Jones documentary, “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart: A Film About Wilco”.

This month Wilco are paying tribute to their Yankee Hotel Foxtrot album, by playing gigs in the US to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The album was very important to Wilco’s career. The band had previously been marginalised primarily as an Alt-Country act. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was Wilco’s great leap forward, seeing the band incorporate more atmospheric and experimental Art-Rock sounds than their previous work.

Recording sessions for the album began in late 2000. These sessions were marred by conflicts including a switch in drummers and disagreements among the band members and engineers about songs, and ultimately the ejection of multi-instrumentalist and co-songwriter Jay Bennett.

With Wilco nearing completion of their album, a new conflict arose between the band and its record label Reprise, a division of the Warner Music Group. Wilco's prior albums hadn't performed to Reprise's sales expectations and Reprise were concerned with how to market this “difficult” new album. They consequently rejected the work and dropped Wilco from the label.

With a completed album and no contractual obligations to Reprise, Wilco made the album available to download on their website. Awareness of the new album became apparent and Wilco's profile was rising. In response, another record label, Nonesuch Records, offered Wilco a new record contract. Nonesuch Records is a division of Warner Music Group, like Reprise. So Wilco were essentially paid twice for the album by the same record company.

“I Am Trying to Break Your Heart: A Film About Wilco” is a 2002 black-and-white documentary by director/photographer Sam Jones, which follows the band through those ups and downs of the creation, distribution and release of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

I first heard Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and indeed Wilco, bouncing around on the back of a crappy old bus travelling through Southern India around New Year 2002. I had asked my companion what she was listening to on her mp3 player, and she passed me her headphones.

Back in the UK a couple of years later, I saw the band perform for the first time at the Glastonbury festival, and then again many times after that.

Today, the 15th of April 2022, Wilco commence their “We Are Touring To Break Your Heart’ shows – basically five gigs in NYC followed by three in their home town of Chicago. They will play the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot album in its entirety. I for one would love to be at one of the shows. Sadly I am 13,000 miles away in Hong Kong. But here at least is my tribute to a brilliant album by a favourite band.
