A Conversation with Artist Selven O'Keef Jarmon

Selven O’Keef Jarmon is a Houston- based artist whose current work embodies the social sculpture practices as a way of including public participation in a work that is connected to broader cultural and social ideas. Within his work, Selven explores the ways in which social and cultural norms lack the facility to translate differences in a natural life setting but opens to a well of thought and potentials within active visual spaces. His work in real-time subjugates the immediate reservations built around the “fear of others” and thereby replaces it with the object tools in making something together. A “something” of epic proportion that inconspicuously speaks to the very cultural and social natures of the individuals making the object. In doing so, this work embodies a collective memory of themselves and people around them building visual life into a piece of sculpture.
