Matopo National Park | MOTH Shrine | Bulawayo Zimbabwe - Part 1
Explore the vast expanse of Matopo National Park, a sprawling natural wonder that demands several days to fully appreciate. This incredible park, whose name is rooted in the history of the Lozwi people, forefathers of Kalan, encompasses approximately 424 km² of breathtaking terrain. Its fame rests on the ancient rock paintings from the Stone Age, as well as the captivating balancing rock formations that grace its landscape. Within its borders, you'll encounter a rich diversity of wildlife, including black and white rhinos, zebras, hyenas, giraffes, and numerous antelope species, to name just a few.
Matopo National Park also holds a significant historical allure, with remnants from colonial times that beckon exploration. Visit the final resting place of Cecil John Rhodes and the poignant Memorable Order of Tin Hats (MOTH) Shrine, a solemn memorial dedicated Rhodesians who died during the First and Second World Wars.
Before Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980, both Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and South Africa played pivotal roles in the First and Second World Wars as British colonies. They provided troops and vital resources, and after the wars, the daunting task of repatriating and rehabilitating servicemen fell upon these nations. The British government, overwhelmed by its own post-war challenges, struggled to assist the colonies in their disarmament, demobilization, rehabilitation, reintegration, and repatriation (DDRRR) efforts.
Southern Rhodesia found itself responsible for these processes but lacked the necessary resources. In 1927, Charles Evendon established the Memorable Order of Tin Hats (MOTH) in Durban, South Africa, with a noble purpose: to aid fellow comrades in need, whether financially or physically, and to honor all servicemen who had perished in wartime and peacetime. MOTH sought to address the lingering issues related to reintegration and rehabilitation.
Initially formed to support First World War veterans in South Africa, MOTH's popularity surged, leading it to extend its reach to other Southern African nations within its first three years of existence. Addressing issues like educational programs, vocational skills training, employment, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), MOTH stepped in where the Southern Rhodesian government faced limitations. The organization's primary goals included facilitating the successful reintegration of ex-service personnel into civilian life through socio-economic development projects and preserving war memorials while constructing remembrance sites. Explore with me the remarkable history and natural beauty of Matopo National Park.
