Smooth Hound Fishing Hill Head

I set off early and head for the Nab Tower but wind and sea state are against me, I get 3/4 of the way and choose to turn around. I head back towards calmer waters and decide on a mark given to me only a day before by Wayne Harris.

Fishing from a small boat (16’5”) you have to pay close attention to the weather forecast but even those can’t get it perfect. Always safer to turn round and fish another day or tuck away in shelter.

I anchor at my alternative mark and decide to fish 2 of 4 rods as the position is very shallow (8-12’) and there is a risk of tangles.

There is the choice of up-tide or down-tide setups and so in the interests of comparisons, I chose one of each. The target is smooth hounds but the depth of water gives me doubts.

Within minutes of dipping a line the reel screams into action and all hell breaks loose, what follows turns into an adrenaline pumping session I will not forget.
