Treasurer pressed on amount of economic support delivered by govt

Shadow Treasurer Jim Chalmers has pressed his counterpart on how much of the government’s economic support has actually been delivered to the Australian people.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg announced the “government is providing an unprecedented $314 billion in economic support, the equivalent of $12,500 for every Australian man, woman and child”.

“In relation to the cashflow boost, 785,418 recipients have received $24.1 billion, Mr Speaker,” Mr Frydenberg said.

“In relation to Economic Support Payments Phase number one, in relation to $750 payments, 7.3 million people received $5.5 billion.

“In relation to the Economic Support Payments Phase number two, $3.7 billion.

“Mr Speaker, when it comes to our $314 billion, which is a 15.8 per cent of GDP, we’d also like to see the states contribute more, Mr Speaker, because their contribution has been around 2.4 per cent of gross state product.

“He (Mr Chalmers) often is complaining about debt and deficit, but then asking us to spend more, Mr Speaker.”
