Melpa People in Papua New Guinea

🇵🇬 Kulkie Cultural Center and the Melpa People

We were transported to another world, a hidden gem tucked away in the heart of Mount Hagen down a red dirt side road in Papua New Guinea.
At this cultural center we learned how to make fire using ancient methods and watched as they demonstrated the craftsmanship behind tools made from basalt rock—a skill passed down through generations.
The experience became even more magical as we stepped inside a traditional round hut, a space where men gather to debate and make important decisions. The atmosphere was brought to life with the hauntingly beautiful sound of traditional flutes, accompanied by courtship ritual songs that echoed stories of love and connection.
Another highlight of our visit was meeting the chief and his three wives (he once had four, but one passed away). They shared with us the fascinating marriage culture that helps connect and strengthen ties between tribes—a reminder of how deeply community and tradition are woven into their lives, even still today.
Our visit to the Kulkie Village Cultural Center was an unforgettable dive into the rich traditions of the Melpa tribe made special by Trans Niugini Tours, Papua New Guinea who included this stop on our Mount Hagen itinerary.
