Huli Wigmen of Papua New Guinea
🇵🇬 Meeting the Huli and their human hair wigs in Papua New Guinea
It’s not every day that you get to sit down with someone and have them share everything about their culture and traditions one on one. But that’s exactly what happened when we visited Chief Don of the Huli Wigmen tribe at the stunning Panga Cultural Village just outside Mount Hagen.
We were honored to experience firsthand the intricate process of traditional face painting, a sacred art form in their community. Chief Don explained the significance behind each color—yellow, red, and white—created using clay and natural elements, each symbolizing something deeply rooted in their heritage. Watching him paint his face from start to finish was intriguing, a blend of precision, pride, and artistry.
But it didn’t stop there! We were treated to a personal demonstration of how the famous Huli Wigmen wigs are crafted and maintained. These elaborate creations, made from human hair, bird of paradise, cockatoo, and parrot feathers, are not just hats—they’re living expressions of identity and tradition. We even got to try on one of their wigs.
Women’s fashion was equally captivating, with their tree kangaroo head wraps, grass skirts, and delicate feather details. We even got a close up look at their nose piercings, made from bamboo sticks adorned with feathers—and yes, they had some fun showing us how to take them in and out!
This was more than just an encounter; it was an invitation to see the world through their eyes, to feel the heartbeat of a culture so different yet so beautifully human.
Special thanks to Trans Niugini Tours, Papua New Guinea for adding in this village visit on to our Mount Hagen itinerary.
