Exploring LA 96-C Cold War Missile Control Site 4K HDR

Come with me as I explore the rusting remains of an interesting piece of cold war history!

Before ICBM’s the only way to deliver nuclear weapons to your enemy was to fly them there via bomber. This radar site, and around 15 others, protected Los Angeles with interceptor missiles that were designed to take out the Russian bombers before they reached their target. This was a SAM (surface To Air Missile) site. In the early 60s some of the Nike "Ajax" interceptor missile sites were upgraded to Nike "Hercules" which were larger, more reliable, easier to fuel and could carry small nukes, the thinking being that they could take out an entire squadron of bombers simply by detonating a nuke near them. When the world developed Inter Continental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM’s), it made this site and it’s tech, obsolete. On 4 February 1974, the Army ordered all existing US Nike batteries deactivated. This one, abandoned in place is a reminder of a different time.
