Stokowski conducts César Franck Symphony in D minor - Netherlands Radio Philharmonic ('live' 1970)

In the 1920s and '30s, Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra made the first American recordings of countless repertoire works. They included the four Brahms symphonies; Beethoven's 5th, 7th and 9th; Schubert's "Unfinished"; Dvorak's "New World"; Tchaikovsky's 4th; Sibelius's 4th; Shostakovich's 1st, 5th and 6th; and the Franck Symphony heard here. At the time it was one of the most popular symphonies in the repertoire and in fact Stokowski and his Philadelphians recorded it twice on 78s.

When he began recording for Decca/London in its "Phase 4 Stereo" system, the Franck Symphony was scheduled with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, named the Hilversum Radio Philharmonic on the commercial release. It was preceded by two 'live' concerts and the Rotterdam performance was released on CD. Here it is, splendidly conducted by an 88-year-old maestro who was born while the composer was still alive!

From the concert of 22 August 1970, given in De Doelen, Rotterdam. The three movements are marked: (1) Lento; Allegro ma non troppo; (2) Allegretto; (3) Finale: Allegro non troppo.
