The History of Volkswagen In America

The English translation of Volkswagen is “people’s car”. The first Volkswagen model which is today known as the Beetle was the vision of sports car pioneer Ferdinand Porsche. The first Volkswagens were imported to the US in 1949.

For the American market Volkswagens were marketed as the Victory Wagon in recognition of the Allied victory over Germany four years earlier. The Victory Wagon’s introduction into the US auto market was anything but victorious. Only two Victory Wagons were sold in 1949.

One of the cars was sold for just enough money to settle the importer’s hotel bill. Between that inauspicious beginning and 1955 Americans would buy 1 million Volkswagens. The 1960s was Volkswagen’s banner decade in the US.

Fast forward to 2013 when the Atlas prototype was introduced as a plug-in hybrid. The version of the Atlas that became available in North America in 2017 was gasoline-powered.

Speculating About The 2021 Atlas
The first generation Atlas is two years old yet reports are that the second generation Atlas will debut in 2021. If accurate this report means that at least in the case of the Atlas Volkswagen is breaking with its tradition of revamping a model line every four years.

We will talk more about the changes for 2021 later. The 2021 Atlas will offer an array of safety features including an overhead camera that offers a more complete view of the area around the vehicle.

Adaptive Cruise Contol
Area View
Blind Spot Manager
Lane Assist
Light Assist
Park Assist
Park Distance Control w/ Distance Breaking
Additional safety features will include a rearview camera, Intelligent Crash Response System, and Automatic Post Collision Braking. Two versions of the 2021 Atlas will be available. The Atlas 2.0T will be the 4-cylinder version and will offer the choice of three trim packages. Named for the engine it comes with the Atlas V6 will offer the buyer 12 trim levels.

What do current owners think of the 2021 Atlas
Reading reviews submitted by Volkswagen Atlas owners you are struck by the diversity of owner experiences. The majority of respondents love their Atlas. Those who are unhappy with their Atlas are passionate about their contempt for their Atlas.

One owner’s buyer’s remorse seems to border on seething hatred. In fairness, there is nothing as frustrating as shelling out tens-of-thousands of dollars for a ride that spends more time on the lift than on the road. There were more balanced critiques that discussed the Atlas’ pros and cons.

Ultimately, the authors of those balanced critiques expressed overall satisfaction with their Atlas. All the owners, even those who wrote the most scathing reviews, were pleased with the Atlas’ capacious cabin and smooth ride.

There was repeated mention of how easy it is to get children who require car seats in and out of the second-row seats. Whether their Atlas had the four of six-cylinder engine owners were generally in agreement that both power plants want for throttle response and power.

When the scores were tallied owners gave the Volkswagen Atlas an overall rating of 4.3 out of 5-stars. Sixty-five percent of respondents were completely satisfied with their Atlas.

2021 Atlas Reports
The source of the following information is Motor Trend magazine’s website. According to MT the reason for the premature redesign of the Atlas is the addition of bumpers that in a vehicle vs pedestrian accident will afford the pedestrian greater protection from injury.

The addition of the safer bumpers will add three inches to the Atlas. Traffic Jam Assist and Road Sign Detection will be added to the available driver assistance features. MT reports that for 2021 the warranty on the Atlas will be 4-years/50,000 miles.
