Hi guys, my name is Jason Leung. I am classically trained in Shotokan Karate Do in the USA. I hold the rank of 4th Degree Black Belt in Shotokan Karate. In this video I present to you guys "The Classic Kata" of Shotokan Karate. The karate kata or karate forms included here, are part of kata series currently in progress, in which I will be filming the various other Shotokan Style Kata. Kata performed in this video in order:

In my humble opinion the purpose of kata, may have been originally for self defense, but the way many schools teach it now, and specifically the way I was taught was never in this context. Many who have experienced this amnesia of kata application attempt to go looking in the past, diving into history (which is not bad), but at the same time, I thought, why look back? I thought it was much better to look forward into the future of karate. Nowadays, I don't try to contemplate cookie cutter applications or bukai of the karate kata of shotokan. Rather I use them to help me develop a higher awareness of karate principles and my technique. Now when it comes to self defense, I just straight up practice self defense, and there have been many concepts and applications that are widely taught in other disciplines and styles. I'm talking about judo, jiu jitsu, kickboxing, wrestling, boxing. In conjunction with my karate, I incorporate what I find useful in all these styles, and make an entirely new one. Now your question may be is kata still relevant? My answer would be yes, but only to those seeking a martial arts lifestyle, for those seeking perfection of character, and especially to those who abide by the laws of budo and bushido. If you just however want to learn to punch and kick, join a kickboxing gym. Kata to me is the bridge between the physical and spiritual in martial art, it is like a mantra that one repeats, or a passage that one recites over and over. This in turn reveals the multitude of secrets that are only unlocked by the great. Many will read this, but only few (the true martial artists of the world) will understand. OSS!
