Ethiopia nile dam news: Ethiopia is building a massive dam on Blue Nile, a major tributary of The Nile. This Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has become a bone of contention in Africa. Ethiopia is the source of almost 85 percent of the Nile river's water. Egypt depends on the Nile river for 90 percent of its fresh water usage. Egypt sees the Ethiopian dam as an existential threat. For Ethiopia, this Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is a ticket to fortune. This GERD hydropower project is estimated to generate 6,000 megawatt of electricity. Apart from lighting up millions of Ethiopian homes, Ethiopia also hopes to earn billions from selling electricity to neighboring countries. On July 22, Ethiopia announced that the first stage of filling Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) was achieved due to heavy rains. Egypt, pissed with this development, halted the diplomatic talks. Sudan also threatened to withdraw from the talks. Watch this video to know the details.
